In December, something magical happens in La Cala de Mijas. Our small Czech community comes together to sing the Christmas carols we grew up with — songs that remind us of home, snow, and that special Czech Christmas atmosphere. But as you already know, this event has long since become much more than just a “Czech” gathering.
When we organised Czechia Sings Christmas Carols here in La Cala for the first time, we had no idea how many people would come. We thought a few friends and families might show up… but in the end, it turned into an evening we will never forget.
Not only Czechs and Slovaks came, but also our British, Spanish, Polish and Dutch neighbours — simply people from all over the world who were drawn in by the laughter and the smell of mulled wine.
The atmosphere was incredible. Everyone had a cup of mulled wine in hand, someone brought Christmas cookies, someone else brought vánočka or potato salad, and before long we were singing Christmas carols in almost every language.
In Czech, Spanish, English…
And even though everyone was singing a little differently, at that moment we all felt the same thing — joy, pride and a sense of togetherness.
It was an evening that reminded us that Christmas is not about where we come from, but about being together.
💛 Every year, our event also has a charitable purpose. Together, we collect donations for a children’s home in Málaga, which helps children without families enjoy a beautiful Christmas.
The money raised is used to buy presents so that every child receives their own Christmas gift — and for us, that is one of the most meaningful parts of the entire event.
And that is exactly why we will be meeting again this year — on 10 December, from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, in front of the Ayuntamiento de Mijas in La Cala de Mijas.
There will be mulled wine, Czech Christmas treats and, most importantly, a wonderful festive atmosphere.
The group carol singing will begin at 6:00 PM, at the same time as across the Czech Republic.
Come and join us — with your family, with friends, or simply on your own.
It does not matter whether you know all the lyrics. The important thing is to come, sing with us and enjoy the true spirit of Christmas.
